Virgin Trains operates two long distance rail franchises in the UK , West Coast and CrossCountry. The West Coast Mainline is the main arterial link between England , Wales and Scotland and is the most heavily-used main line in Europe . Over 15 million people travel on Virgin Trains’ services on the West Coast route every year. CrossCountry links 115 towns and cities across the UK and carries 16 million people a year, from Aberdeen to Penzance and Brighton to North Wales.
Virgin Trains operates 53 Pendolino (Class 390) electric tilting trains on the West Coast Mainline and 68 Voyager/Super Voyager (Class 200/221) diesel trains on CrossCountry. Virgin Trains has asked Broadreach Networks to supply and operate a public Wi-Fi service on all 131 Pendolino and Voyager/Super Voyager trains – the largest order for on-train Wi-Fi ever placed. The service will be rolled out progressively across both fleets from 2005.
In addition to the on-train service, Broadreach is also providing Wi-Fi service at the stations used by Virgin Trains. Service is currently available in the Virgin first class lounges at London Euston, Coventry , Birmingham New Street , Stoke-on-Trent and Manchester Piccadilly. The service will be rolled out to the remaining stations on the West Coast Mainline shortly.
